Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler
A herding breed and a hard worker this dog should not be expected to live a sedetary life or be alone for long periods. They are great for agility training and a very active person. They are gentle with children but have a herding instinct thus are usually not happy unless all their herd are in the same room. They tend to nip at heals of running children also. This breed, like most, should be greatly socialized as puppies b/c as they grow they can become slightly protective of their family "herd".

Australian Shepherd
Australian Shepherds are a herding breed. They are forever puppies and love to play, chase and work. This breed requires a job or they will get bored and find things to do. I have often heard this breed described as humans in dog bodies. They are highly intelligent! Aussie's (for short) can be slightly protective when protecting their herd (family). They tend to nip at the heels of running children. They are NOT recommended for apartment life due to their need for high activity.

Beagle
The Beagle follows its nose wherever it goes and was bred for the hunt. When on scent, this tenacious dog breed will block out everything around it - including you. Their wonderful, docile, loving personalities make them excellent family pets. Beagles need companionship and daily exercise, preferably in a fenced yard that is very secure because Beagles will dig their way out if left alone and bored. Sadly this breed gets overlooked by most families because they think they bay and bark alot. May do but in my experience with my personal beagles, it is all in the training! My beagle think they are humane and baying would be beneath them.

Black Forest Hound
On first glance, the Black Forest Hound (also Slovakian Hound) seems very similar to the Black and Tan Coonhound of the US but more careful examination indicates that this smaller, heavier built Scenthound's greatest similarity with the Coonhound is by their black and tan markings. Most common in Europe where it originated, the temperament, energy and working ability of the Black Forest Hound is very similar to that of the better known Beagle, Harrier, Foxhound and others. It is important to note that the black forest hound is prone to shyness if not properly socialized. They are generally very good with kids and other pets as long as they don’t view the pets as prey.

Border Terriers are very mild mannered dogs. They are especially affectionate with children and they just want to please. They have a tendency to be timid of loud noises and are very sensitive to abuse or yelling. They like to dig so a secure fence is required or leash walking. You must keep them tuckered out though b/c they are bred for an active lifestyle and they like to explore. Originally bred to
help farmers drive predatory foxes from their dens and kill them. So a home with no cats is preferable.

Chihuahua's make good companions. They are loving and loyal but are generally not good for homes with small children. They have what is called a Napoleon complex in most cases. They think they are a big dog in a small package. They are very small and fragile and can be temperamental when unhappy. They do require more exercise then you would think by their size and they are not happy living uneventful lives. Chihuahua's like to get out and about. They make great apartment dogs. This breed can be a wonderful family pet and is very loyal. They tend to be very good with their family and very loving to the children if raised with them. They are a dominant breed though and need a dog savy person to handle them. They tend to be bossy and very independent and aloof. Don't expect great obedience from them and do expect to brush them alot to maintain thier coat. When mixed with other breeds though, the chow genes seem to get surpressed more easily according to stusied at the University of Iowa. Beware of hip issues and eye infections.

Cocker Spaniel
Gentle, sweet, sensitive and trusting, the Cocker Spaniel makes a wonderful family dog, as long as the dog was socialized as a puppy. The Cocker is generally always happy. He tends to greet everyone he meets with zest and tail wagging. They are very sensitive though so if your cocker has been through some traumatic experience, he may be more nervous and leery of strangers. This is totally fear based and easily workable. Lively and affectionate, this little long dog can be clown-like when excited and happy. They are better with older children b/c they can be protective and temperamental if mishandled. Dachshunds are prone to spinal problems which can occur early in life. A Dachshund home should discourage the dog from learning to jump on and off of furniture. Their food should be monitor. They have a tendency to become overweight which creates better ground work for those back problems. They like to bark and they like to dig. A Doxie should never be left alone outside unattended.

Miniature Pinscher (minpin)
The Miniature Pinscher is one of the most intelligent and active breeds. They are called the "King of Toys" (toy breeds). Playful and brave, the Miniature Pinscher is described as a "big dog in a little dog's body." Min-Pins may be aggressive in everything they do. By aggressive we do not mean they will always bite but that they have a zest for everything. They are constantly busy and need a home with lots of varing stimulation. They can be territorial and protective and need a home that has dog experience. This breed is not for the faint hearted or the heavy handed. It is not for a first time dog owner either. Coupled with thier high energy is thier loving ability to snuggle up close and the absolute need to be under a blanket. Minpins are very cold natured. The Miniture Pinscher has no genetic connection to the full sized Doberman Pinscher. It is believed that the Minpin is actually derived frm the Italian Greyhound and the Dachshund. They are called Miniature Pinschers in the USA simply for the publics benefit. Don't let a Minpin get away from you..you have never seen a dog run that fast!

Pit Bull Terrier
Good natured, loyal and affectionate, when properly trained the Pit Bull Terrier is an excellent companion with both children and adults, as well as an excellent guard dog. The Pit Bull is loyal and very eager to please its master. This dog was originally bred as a family dog and the United States turned the breed into a fighting breed. Now, due to over breeding and in-breeding the dogs can sometimes be aggressive towards other breeds and people if not properly socialized at a young age. The media continues to give this breed a bad reputation by persecuting the breed and NOT the owner or breeder. I have personal experience with many pit bulls and mixes of and I can honestly say that 1% of those dogs has been aggressive. The others have been doll babies, very smart and very snuggly! Pit Bulls are the #1 dog STOLEN in this country. They are also the #1 dog chained in this country.

Pointer
Pointers in general are very sociable, both with people and other dogs. While Pointers do need, and love, regular exercise they are quite settled in the house. In fact, if you don't allow pets on your furniture, you might need to consider another breed -- Pointers are couch potatoes!!! They are quite content with you sitting on the floor while they are spread out across the couch or bed! Pointers are hunting dogs and if they take off after a bird they will ignore your existence thus off leash training is not recommended.

Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier
The Wheaten temperament can make them a challenge to train. They’re smart dogs who typically have their own agendas in life…which very often doesn’t include what you want them to do. If they get away with too much for too long, you can find yourself with an unruly companion. You should plan on obedience training. Wheatens are not for the inexperienced dog owner. They require someone with the time, energy, patience and know-how to train them properly. They are almost too smart for their own good. However, a well-trained Wheaton makes a wonderful companion. Intelligent and loving breed, Soft coated wheaten terriers do well with children and are very devoted to their families, but they will not get along with cats. They are playful, friendly and sweet-tempered.
